The ghost pepper, bhut jolokia, is a hybrid chilli grown in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, with heat above one million Scoville units. Guinness certified it as the world's hottest pepper in 2007, a title later passed to the Trinidad Scorpion, Carolina Reaper and others. The fruit is wrinkled and about seven centimetres long, with a fruity first taste before a slow, deep burn. In northeastern India it is eaten in chutneys and smoked pork dishes, and it has been used on fences to deter elephants. Handling it needs gloves, and a little goes very far.
