Spices of Kochi

A Kerala port on the Malabar coast that has shipped pepper, cardamom and ginger for centuries and still runs one of India's main spice auctions.

Best time: December to March, when the weather is drier and cooler.

Kochi, also known as Cochin, sits on a natural harbour in Kerala. Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders all used it, and the old quarter of Mattancherry still has the warehouses where spices are sorted, graded and sold.

Spices and trade

Black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg and clove pass through Kochi. Pepper from the high ranges and cardamom from Idukki arrive here for grading, and auctions are held for cardamom. Dealers work from old godowns in Mattancherry and Jew Town, where the smell of dried ginger and pepper hangs in the lanes.

The place and its people

The port has a layered history: a Jewish community, Syrian Christians, Konkani merchants, Gujarati traders and Muslim families all took part in the trade. Kerala's cooking draws on that mix, with pepper, coconut, curry leaf, tamarind and kokum all in daily use.

Visiting

Mattancherry and the nearby Jew Town are the places to see spices being handled, and several shops sell whole spices by weight. Visit in the morning when the lanes are busy, and ask before photographing workers or stock.

A trail idea for Kochi

  1. Mattancherry spice lanes Walk the warehouses and shopfronts where pepper, ginger and cardamom are sorted by hand.
  2. Jew Town Browse antique and spice shops close to the Paradesi Synagogue.
  3. Fort Kochi waterfront See the Chinese fishing nets and think about the ships that once loaded spice here.
  4. A Kerala meal Try a fish curry or a sadya with pepper, curry leaf and coconut in the seasoning.
