Kozhikode, once Calicut, was a leading port of the Malabar coast under the Zamorin rulers. Arab, Chinese and later European traders came for pepper, ginger and cinnamon. Vasco da Gama's arrival in 1498 opened the sea route from Europe to India.

Spices and trade

Pepper was the great export, and merchants from West Asia and beyond bought it here. Today Kozhikode remains a trading city, and Mittai Theruvu, or Sweet Meat Street, sells local halwa and sweets flavoured with cardamom and ghee.

The place and its people

The city has a large Muslim community and a distinct Malabar cuisine, with biryani, seafood and sweets. The old port area still has traders in pepper, copra and other goods.

Visiting

Mittai Theruvu, the beach and the old port are central. Kappad beach, north of the city, marks the traditional landing place of da Gama.
