Dhoop

Indian incense: sticks, cones and resin blends burned at home altars and in temples.

A flame: the heat that toasts, tempers and blooms a spice, or the heat the spice itself carries.

Also: dhup, incense sticks, agarbatti, sambrani, loban

Dhoop is the Hindi word for incense. Agarbatti are the thin sticks, rolled from a paste of charcoal, wood powder, resin and perfume on a bamboo core; dhoop sticks and cones are made without the core. Sambrani is the benzoin-based resin of South India, burned on charcoal. Sandalwood, guggul, camphor, jasmine, rose, vetiver, cloves and cardamom feature in different blends. Dhoop is offered at daily worship, aarti and festivals, and the smoke is meant to purify the space and honour the deity. Bangalore and Mysore are known centres of manufacture. Households also burn dhoop during the evening to keep the house fragrant.
