Malabar Coast
The southwest coast of India, home of black pepper, cardamom and the ancient port of Muziris.
Also: Malabar, Kerala coast, Muziris, pepper coast
The Malabar Coast runs along present-day Kerala and parts of Karnataka. Its wet, hilly land is the original home of black pepper and cardamom, and its ports, Muziris, Kozhikode (Calicut), Kochi and Kollam, drew Greek, Roman, Arab, Chinese and later European traders. Roman amphorae and coin hoards, and the Tabula Peutingeriana map, point to Muziris. Vasco da Gama landed near Calicut in 1498. Kochi's Jew Town and its spice godowns still handle trade. Malabar pepper and Tellicherry grades are known worldwide, and the Western Ghats supply cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Syrian Christians, Jews, Muslims and Hindus all built businesses on it.
