Spices of Malacca

A historic port on the Strait of Malacca where Malay, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders met over spices.

Best time: Year round.

Malacca was a major trading sultanate in the fifteenth century, then fell to the Portuguese in 1511, the Dutch in 1641 and the British later. Its position on the strait made it a meeting place for traders carrying pepper, clove and nutmeg from the islands.

Spices and trade

The port collected spices from the Moluccas and Sumatra for sale to Indian, Arab and Chinese merchants. Today Nyonya food, with its pastes of galangal, lemongrass, turmeric and chilli, reflects this mixed history.

The place and its people

The Peranakan or Baba Nyonya community blends Chinese and Malay traditions, and Portuguese-Eurasian families keep their own food.

Visiting

The old town, Jonker Street and the Stadthuys show the colonial past. Nyonya restaurants serve dishes such as ayam pongteh and laksa.
