Spices and trade

Vanilla orchids were pollinated in Mexico by native bees, and in the nineteenth century Edmond Albius, an enslaved boy on Reunion, developed the hand-pollination used today. Papantla vanilla is sold as pods and extract, with caution advised about extract sold in tourist areas.
