Spices for Mawlid an-Nabi

In Egypt, markets fill with halawet el-mouled, sweets made from sesame, nuts, honey and sugar, sold as dolls and horsemen. In Morocco and Algeria, couscous or sfouf is made with sesame, anise and honey. In Turkey, mevlid sekeri, sugared sweets, are handed out, and in Indonesia (Maulid) there is nasi kuning, turmeric rice with side dishes. Sesame, anise and turmeric are used in different places, giving one festival a spread of spice stories.
